A C-section, also called a Caesarean section, is another way of delivering a baby, as opposed to the regular vaginal delivery, also called a normal delivery. It is performed when the baby is big or the weight is more than 4.5 kg. A C-section is a surgical procedure that is invasive and requires an anaesthetic. It involves a cut made in the mother’s abdomen, just above the bikini line. A C-section has an enormous impact on the mother, so it is important to know some of the dos and don’ts after a C-section delivery as well as some health tips after a C-section delivery. This is what we’ll take a look at in this article.

Very many C-sections are emergency cases and are carried out when a vaginal birth is not feasible or advisable. In certain instances, however, a C-section can be planned and carried out if vaginal birth is too risky, which is called an elective C-section.

Reasons why a mother may need to undergo a C-section

There could be certain reasons why a mother may need to have a C-section. Some of them are:

  • The baby is presenting feet first, also called a breech presentation .
  • The mother has a condition called placental praevia, which is a low-lying placenta
  • The mother has high blood pressure, which is pregnancy-related
  • The mother has infections such as genital herpes or untreated HIV
  • The baby needs to be delivered immediately and as an emergency birth because it is not getting enough oxygen or nutrients
  • The mother has had a previous C-section
  • The mother is carrying multiple babies

Dos and Don’ts after a C-section

There are certain Dos and Don’ts to be followed after a C-section delivery and how to take care after a C-section delivery. They are:

Dos

  1. Relieve and treat pain: You should take your doctor’s advice regarding pain relief. The most common medications used to treat your pain following a C-section are ibuprofen and paracetamol. Both of these are readily available in pharmacies and supermarkets. However, you should not self-medicate yourself for pain but should follow your doctor’s prescription.
  2. Take everything slowly and easily: In the weeks following your C-section, free up your schedule so that you can have plenty of rest and do take care of cracked nipples and breasts. This will enable you to bond with and care for your baby and will also relieve the pressures of daily life.  You should only go back to your regular physical and social activities when you are pain-free and feel energized and ready to do so. (craked nipples breast
  3. Take good care of your wound: After a C-section, you need to take good care of your wound to avoid infection and promote rapid healing. You should keep the area dry and clean and should wash the incision daily with soap and water. After cleaning the incision, you should pat it dry gently. If your doctor has used incision tape on your wound, do not remove it, but wait for it to fall off on its own. Do not use any medicinal or topical products on your wound without first checking with your doctor.
  4. Eat well and drink plenty of water: This is vital when recovering after a C-section. You should hydrate your body regularly to ensure that your body functions properly. You should also eat healthily and well to provide your body with the macronutrients and micronutrients it needs to get back to normal quickly. Eat foods rich in vitamin C  and green vegetables and protein-rich all these fasten the wound healing.)
  5. Follow your doctor’s advice carefully: Do meet your doctor after a week of surgery. It is important that you follow your doctor’s advice and do not take it lightly. Ask for your doctor’s guidance if you are unsure about anything and follow their advice closely.
  6. Ask for help if you need it: Caring for a new baby is exciting but demanding. Doing so when recovering from a C-section is even more difficult. If you are struggling, do not hesitate to reach out to family, friends, your partner, or a professional. Ask for help to care for your baby, to do your shopping, or to carry out tasks around the house. This will lower your stress levels and give you more time to rest.

Don’ts

  1. Drive for 4 to 6 weeks: While there is no hard and fast rule about driving after a C-section, doctors usually recommend that you wait until your Caesarean scar has healed before driving. This is so that you can feel in control of the car and you can make any emergency stops without too much pain.
  2. Exercise too much: While it is important that you move around the house after a C-section, you should not indulge in any heavy or strenuous exercise, such as running, weightlifting, circuit training, and so on. You should consult with your doctor before starting your exercise program.(moder
  3. Have sex: You should resume having sex and when you feel ready to do so. Doctors typically recommend that you resume having sex 4 to 6 weeks after your C-section.
  4. Try to avoid coughing, and sneezing: While this may seem impossible, you should try to avoid it. Laughing, sneezing and coughing put pressure on your stomach muscles and your new stitches. A good thing to do is to put a pillow over your stitches when you laugh, cough, or sneeze, and press on it. This will help reduce the stress and pain in your abdominal muscles.
  5. Be embarrassed by anything: Sometimes, when you have a C-section, it can feel undignified or embarrassing. When you are recovering from your C-section, it requires self-care and patience. You may also need to tweak your usual routine so that you can help your post-birth body heal and you can adjust to caring for a new baby. You may suffer from muscle and incision pain, urinary incontinence, discharge, and vaginal bleeding for about 4 to 6 weeks after a C-section. Get in touch with other new mothers who have been through a C-section and ask for advice and help. If your symptoms get worse over time, consult immediately with your doctor.
